About Serah Janneh

Serah Janneh was a radiant force of compassion, purpose, and quiet strength. A proud Gambian-
American, Muslim, and advocate for Black identity, Serah dedicated her life to uplifting
others—especially youth in the Bronx, the community she called home and served with
unwavering love.

As a student at Lehman College and an active member of the Gambian Youth Organization
(GYO) and SCWEN, Serah embodied service. She mentored young girls, helping them shape
their identities, build confidence, and find purpose. Through her work in social services and
grassroots community engagement, she broke barriers and redefined what leadership looks
like—grounded in empathy, humility, and action.

Serah’s life was tragically cut short in the Bronx Twin Parks Fire on January 9, 2022, where she
was one of 17 lives lost. Yet her legacy continues through the lives she touched, the community
she strengthened, and the love she gave so freely.

The Sera Janneh Scholarship was created by her friends and family of the Smiling Coast Women
Empowerment Network (SCWEN) to honor her legacy by supporting young Black Muslim
women of African origin who share her commitment to service, leadership, and community
empowerment.

Smiling Coast Women Empowerment  (SCWEN)

SCWEN’s mission is to elevate African Muslim women in New York City by strengthening their presence in leadership and creating pathways to educational and professional success. Through leadership training, mentorship, and access to vital resources, we help women and girls build the skills, networks, and confidence they need to thrive.
